Who Should Attend/Prerequisites

This course is for leaders and managers in software or product development, generally within Information Technology groups. It is recommend that two (or more) people per organization attend the same session in order to have a shared context to do exercises against, and to increase the likelihood of the learning being applied successfully in practice.

Course Overview

This 2-day hands-on course is designed to enable individuals to lead successful Kanban implementations. The training guides beginners through the fundamentals of Lean Thinking, Kanban Systems, and the Kanban Method, demonstrating the design and evolution of Kanban systems.

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • represent your current process as a kanban system
  • provide clear visibility of your work, its status, and progress
  • describe how your current process meets your organizational needs
  • tailor your process with a set of well-understood and explicit policies
  • explore opportunities to improve your effectiveness, coordination and reliability
  • measure your work in order to gain knowledge and continue to improve
  • lead your teams in their ongoing improvement efforts

This course is accredited through the Lean Kanban University. This course is taught by Eric Willeke, an Accredited Kanban Trainer (AKT) and seasoned Coach at Rally Software.  Those attending will walk away with a clear understanding for how to utilize the Kanban techniques of lean and systems thinking in order to improve existing practices. This course is a balance of lecture, workshop and exercises.


Agenda

The agenda is designed to help you move from understanding where you are now, to designing a Kanban System to enhance your current process and then on to evolving new and improved processes and practices.     2. Experience a flow based system

  3. Instantiating a Kanban System
    1. Share an existing system as an explicit Kanban System
    2. Allocate investment and set work-in-process limits for a system
    3. Define cadences and synchronisation points
  4. Evolving a Kanban System
    1. Contrast different mindsets and approaches towards evolving systems
    2. Use A3s and equivalent techniques to produce effective change exploration plans
    3. Apply metrics and charts to evaluate the performance of the system
    4. Quantify potential benefits of improvements
